Info on Recent E-Bike Legislation
Recent legislation (SB6110) which regulates the use of e-bikes and e-motos went into effect on June 11th. There are currently 3 classifications of e-bikes (Class 1, 2 & 3) and 1 classified as an e-moto. If you have a Class 2 or 3 e-bike or an e-moto, you must be 16+ to operate them.
If you’re under 16, you can ride a Class 1 e-bike. A Class 1 e-bike is defined as an e-bike powered by the person riding it via pedals with a max speed of 20mph. The motor must be 750 watts or less. Class 1 e-bikes
Class 2 & 3 e-bikes and e-motos are now classified as an electric motorcycle which you must be 16+ to operate. While Class 2 & 3 e-bikes share common features with a Class 1, they have several differences (see attached chart).
If you’re a parent with a child with an e-bike, please check the bike to ensure that it is a Class 1 and legal for your child to ride. Please also ensure that they’re wearing a helmet and following the rules of the road.
🟢 Class 1 & 2 are permitted on sidewalks and trails.
🔴 Class 3 are NOT permitted on sidewalks or public trails.
