Home Security Lighting Tips

Some quick tips for improving your home security and keeping unwanted guests off your property. Effective home security lighting should deter would be prowlers and also illuminate the ones who have already stepped foot onto your property. Give them nowhere to hide in the shadows. As our night shift officers are patrolling your neighborhoods at night, it provides them with a quick visual of your property to spot anyone or anything out of place that can be impossible to see in the dark.

✅ Motion Sensor Lights – These have been around forever and are effective at moving prowlers who have already trespassed onto your property along. They don’t want to be seen and it is easier for them to attempt to try door handles, break into cars and go in and out of structures on your property if they have the cover of darkness to freely do so.

✅ Illuminate Exterior Doors – Porch lights, lights over doors help to keep prowlers away by giving them nowhere to hide. It also helps you to spot someone approaching your residence much easier than in an unlit area. In the vast majority of residential burglaries, suspects enter via the front or rear doors of the home. While the movies make it seem like Freddy Krueger or Michael Myers will enter from the second story or via a window, it’s typically pretty rare. It’s much easier to walk in through an unsecured door than trying to climb in through an unsecured window or other access point.

✅ Illuminate Other Areas – Outdoor sheds, detached garages, dark corners of the property that make for easy access to your property. Light up your driveway to keep light on your vehicles and walkways which also give you a safely illuminated path to walk at night. Landscape lighting to highlight different portions of your property also serves the dual purpose of beautification and security.

🔦 Take a minute after dark to look out of the windows of your property. Can you see from your front window all the way to the street or is it too dark for you to even see much further past your window? Do the same in your backyard and determine if you can see your property line, shed or other structures currently. If not, you could use some additional exterior lighting.
